Beth Meyerson, PhD

 Professor, Family and Community Medicine

In August 2019, Dr Meyerson joined the faculty of the Southwest Institute for Research on Women at the University of Arizona. Prior to that and since September 2011, she was an Associate Professor of Health Policy & Management at the Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. Beth retains her role as the Co-Director of the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and as affiliate faculty at The Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. Dr. Meyerson has over two decades of public health practice and research experience, typified by roles as president of a policy research consultancy focused on HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, with an international portfolio (1998-2011), and as the state AIDS/STD Director for Missouri (1994-1998). Most of her research is interdisciplinary, combining policy and organizational science with behavioral and clinical outcomes research. Dr. Meyerson’s research interests include public health policy and systems to advance population health with focus on sexual health and harm reduction. Her research is oriented as translational to program and policy through the application of implementation science and community-based participatory research. Beth's systems research includes the identification of need and opportunities for system expansion to improve access to sexual health and harm reduction services. Examples are the study of alternative screening and follow-up venues for cervical cancer (STD clinics), HIV testing (pharmacies and community health centers), and PrEP, addictions screening, syringe and naloxone access for HIV, hepatitis C and overdose reduction (pharmacy practice expansion). Policy research includes policy behaviors and their measurement, particularly by public institutions including studies of state STD investment, local public health accreditation, reported policy behaviors of state STD programs and local health departments, country-level policy planning, and policy adoption for syringe access.
Areas of Interest: stress, sleep health, mental health, obesity, cognitive behavioral intervention, involuntary job loss, workplace wellness, public safety

Dr. Haynes’ research investigates how disruptions in social rhythms, or the regularity of an individual’s daily routine, may lead to the development of cardiometabolic or mental health risk in vulnerable individuals. Her research also explores the bidirectional relationship between stress exposure and sleep disturbances. She is interested in studying how sleep interventions may be adapted to increase effectiveness and uptake in at-risk populations. Dr. Haynes’ has led research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NHLBI, NIMH), Department of Defense, American Sleep Medicine Foundation, Arizona Institute for Mental Health Research, and Canyon Ranch Center for Prevention and Health Promotion.

Dr. Haynes is committed to the translation of research findings to clinical practice. She is a licensed clinical psychologist with a diplomate certification in behavioral sleep medicine. She has more than 20 years of experience providing evidence based intervention to patients in multiple settings including the VA, academic healthcare, and workplace. Therapeutic modalities include: CBT, DBT, ACT, and MI. She also provides Cognitive Behavioral Social Rhythm Therapy, a group intervention her team developed and tested to reduce stress symptoms and promote resiliency.

Alicia Allen, PhD, MPH began working in clinical research on substance use disorders in 2001 as an undergraduate student. This experience prompted her to obtain her masters in community health education, graduate certification in addiction studies and doctorate in social and behavioral epidemiology, all from the University of Minnesota. She also completed a fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the area of prenatal smoking. As an epidemiologist, Alicia is particularly interested in research study design and evaluating causality. She has conducted randomized clinical trials, controlled cross-over trials, and cross-sectional online surveys, as well as analyzed data from large epidemiological datasets. Her research interests are on the role of sex/gender and sex hormones within addictive behaviors, as well as healthy behavior changes. Currently she is exploring the role of hormonal contraceptives (e.g. birth control pills) in smoking cessation, as well as relapse to smoking, marijuana and opioids. Further work is investigating the protective effects of exercise on addictive behaviors. Alicia has received funding from the National Institutes of Health, ClearWay Minnesota, and University of Minnesota. She has published numerous manuscripts and is the editorial fellow for the Journal of Addiction Medicine.
