My laboratory investigates mechanisms contributing to insulin resistance that occur as a result of physical inactivity, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome. We are particularly interested in defining the contribution of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation in impairing skeletal muscle insulin signaling. I also study the effects of insulin resistance and the RAAS on mitochondrial energy (ATP) production in skeletal muscle and exercise capacity.Current Research Activities:1) Determining the effect of angiotensin II on skeletal muscle NAD(P)H oxidase activity and ROS generation using genetic and diet induced insulin resistant rat and mouse models. 2.) Determining the effects of Ang II induced NAD(P)H oxidase activity on mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress in insulin resistant skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue. 3.) Determining the mechanisms by which insulin up-regulates skeletal muscle mitochondrial oxidative capacity.
